The Atticum: A Fusion of Industrial Charm and Sophisticated Design

Florian Studer's Award-Winning Restaurant Design in Switzerland

The Atticum is unique in its design properties. The restaurant is structured around a black core, housing the kitchen, cloakrooms, and storage rooms. The lounge, restaurant with a large roof terrace, bar with fumoir, toilets, and children's playroom are arranged along the window fronts. The central element is a show kitchen, glazed to the guest area, with a central regulars' table placed opposite it. This table is illuminated by a specially manufactured lamp made of copper pans. The design also features cosy cubes inserted into the central cube, which have become a magnet for guests.

The restaurant's realization technology is a reflection of the industrial environment. The black and grey lime plaster, specially developed for this project, is a testament to this. Its unique, rough structure runs through all the rooms. In the detailed execution, materials such as raw steel were deliberately used, with welding seams and grinding marks remaining visible. This impression is supported by the choice of muntin windows. These cold elements are contrasted by warm oak wood, hand-planed herringbone parquet, and a fully planted wall behind wired glass.

Florian Studer faced several design challenges, especially in planning in the gastronomy sector. Knowledge of processes, usage requirements of the different employee groups, and the sustainability of materials were decisive points for the future viability of the business. Studer was able to contribute his experience in a very unusual way in a coherent overall concept. The design was realized after planning started in 2015 and was opened to the public in November 2019.
